The Wool Washery

Almost all of the wool in Iceland is washed in Blonduos before it is sent to the Istex spinnery to become yarn.

Fleeces are sorted into categories by the farmers before arriving at the wool washery. The bags are marked with a number indicating the quality of the wool.

The first machine the wool enters picks the locks apart.

The machine has a tough mascot.

From there it is blown into a chamber that uses air to further separate the wool.

The fluffed wool.

Next the wool is washed in a series of baths with each vat getting the wool cleaner and cleaner.

After the last vat the water is pressed out of the wool.

The next stage is to dry the wool in a large chamber.

Eventually the wool is blown from the ceiling in this room like a snow shower of wool.  It is hard not to have the urge to jump into this clean, soft and fluffy wool.

The last step is to wrap the wool into huge bales before it is shipped off to become high quality yarn.
