In my "Mike 1952 - 1969" post I mentioned some of the jobs before college: Hoff's, Cave of the Mounds, and Camp Indian Sands. Before finishing Luther and starting a career I had some of my most interesting work with interesting people, especially since being a bit farther away from family was new for me. At Luther, in addition to Jan and I working in the food service (Saturday night slop line), I loved working at the college radio station, especially in the new department.
We were fortunate at Luther that so many public accounting firms came on campus to recruit. I chose to go with Arthur Andersen in Minneapolis, starting as a staff auditor, gaining my CPA after a couple of failed attempts. In my first year, several of us accountants were drafted into the management consulting division. They provided computer and management and project training that was fantastic, and I enjoyed technology in business for 40 years.
After Luther, here is my work timeline:
1974 - 1983 Arthur Andersen
1983 - 1989 Western Bank
1989 - 1993 Arthur Andersen
1993 - 2015 Anagram, Amscan
I retired in 2015 at 63 since work, at least the way I approached work, meant it was difficult to pay attention to diabetes. Retirement has been wonderful, and only later did I realize how much stress I carried with my work.
First, a pic with work friends at Arthur Andersen when Detroit for training, and then, well, happy birthday at a balloon company.
