One of the projects I am working on during my residency in Blonduos is a stitching of 5 girls. There will be more later on the theme and why.
This post is about making samples and what they taught me.
My first sample I thought I would use shading using different color fabrics and stitched shading. It was not a success. I learned a lot. Simplify the face. Forget about the shading. Do not use fusible web to stick the fabric to the backing. It is a bear to sew through that stuff with bent needles and very sore fingers. She looks grotesque. I did get some practice with facial features and learned some things there too.
The next sample I made, I used a combination of needle turn appliqué and raw edge fabric that I tacked down. I got more practice with facial features and learned some more things.
I feel confident enough to start on the real project after placing silhouettes on the backing as place holders.
